Transcript
This week's arable sentiment closed on a broadly negative note. Across one hundred and one posts logged over the past seven days, the mood drifted lower as the week wore on. It opened cautious, with growers weighing crop condition against a fragile run of weather. By midweek, frustration had taken hold. By Saturday, the tone had hardened into something distinctly downbeat.
The standout signal was pest pressure. Mentions ran at more than three times the typical baseline, a sharp jump by any measure. This was not a regional story. The spike registered nationally, suggesting growers from multiple corners of the country were flagging similar concerns at the same moment. That breadth is what gives the reading its weight.
Underneath, conversation continued to circle around input costs and the lingering question of yield potential as we move deeper into spring. Neither theme dominated, but both kept the floor.
What to watch next. Whether the pest signal sustains into the first week of June, or fades as a one-week flare. And whether sentiment finds a floor, or slides further.

We harvest it with a Claas Convio header, occasionally get a little bit wrap around the end of the auger but as long as the sun is out, the crop is dry and also upright it doesn’t cause a lot of trouble.
Been through a field of wheat today, found a patch of what I think is blackgrass, but having never had it before..... Field was DD wheat after a 3yr ryegrass/ redclover ley.

How this is built
CropIntel ingests posts daily from active arable forums on The Farming Forum. Each post is scored twice, once by a hand-curated UK-agri lexicon (deterministic), once by a frontier LLM with a one-line rationale, and the two scores are blended with weight toward the LLM. Out-of-season posts (no agronomic signal) are excluded rather than averaged in. The page above is rebuilt every morning from the latest daily aggregate. Full methodology.
The system that produces this pulse (the curated corpus, the model, and the public track record) is available to acquire. See the opportunity.
